A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Wyatt Sutherland became interested in the cello when he was nine years old after hearing the legendary cellist, Janos Starker perform with the Louisville Orchestra. From the initial impression he began taking cello lessons with Guillermo Helguera, and years later proceeded to study with Starker at Indiana University School of Music. Among his other applied teachers are Raya Garbousova, Susanna Onwood, and master classes with Pierre Fournier and Yo-Yo Ma. Wyatt has a deep appreciation for chamber music and he attributes his passion to his studies with Starker, Leonard Bernstein, Mischa Schneider, Gunther Schuller, Louis Krasner, Joseph Gingold, Tokyo String Quartet, and the Beaux Arts Trio.
Wyatt was a recipient of an Aspen Fellowship, and for three consecutive years was awarded a Tanglewood Fellowship under the personal guidance and scholarship of Leonard Bernstein.
